Premier vs Competitive in CS2
CS2 has two ranked systems and they don't share a rank. Here's how they differ and which one to play.
Competitive
The classic system: 18 skill groups from Silver I to The Global Elite. Crucially, your Competitive rank is per map — you can be Gold Nova on Mirage and Master Guardian on Inferno. You play full MR12 matches on a single map you pick from the menu.
Premier
The flagship mode. Instead of a skill group you get a single number — your CS Rating — shown in a coloured bracket (grey, blue, purple, pink, red, gold). Premier opens with a pick/ban phase across the active duty map pool, so map knowledge matters more. CS Rating is a single number across all maps, which makes it the closest thing CS2 has to a "true" rank.
Which should you play?
- Want a clear, single rank? Play Premier — CS Rating is one number and the community treats it as the headline rank.
- Prefer one map? Competitive lets you grind a single map without the ban phase.
- Chasing the leaderboard? Premier feeds the regional and global leaderboards.
How they map to each other
There's no official conversion, but roughly: 5,000–10,000 CS Rating lines up with the Gold Nova range, 10,000–15,000 with Master Guardian, and 20,000+ with the old Supreme / Global Elite tier. See the full rank distribution for the player split in each.
