How to Rank Up in CS2

Ranking up isn't about flashy fragging — it's about the few things that swing rounds. Here's what actually moves your CS Rating.

How ranking works

In Premier, CS Rating moves on a win/loss basis weighted by the rating gap between teams — beat higher-rated teams and you gain more. Round wins, round difference and individual impact nudge the size of the swing. In Competitive, the system tracks a hidden rating and surfaces a skill group; consistent wins against players at or above your group push you up.

What actually wins games

  1. Crosshair placement. Keep it at head height, pre-aimed at common angles. This is the single biggest low-rank fix — set it up with a crosshair you can see clearly.
  2. Utility. One good smoke or flash per round wins more rounds than a flick. Learn three smokes per map you play.
  3. Economy. Buy with your team. Half-buys into full-buys throw rounds. Force or save together.
  4. Trades. Play close enough to a teammate to trade their death. Two-for-ones win the round.
  5. Don't peek bored. Most deaths at every rank are unnecessary peeks. Hold the angle and let them come.
